about

Hopeful Black Metal

“The Dark In The Light”, the third installment of Esme Kenna’s “The Desire To Be At Home” series, has throttled its’ way out of the void.. It’s the French artist’s first entirely instrumental experimental black metal album. The record is stripped down and angry. Yet, strangely angry, in a way that breeds hope. The incorporation of other genres keeps you guessing as to where each track might go. You never know when she’ll stomp on the breaks and bridge into a sludge rock stomper.
The embrace of sludge and stoner metal into a gothic black metal landscape makes this album unique. It still chugs and rips but now knows when to slow down and break. Previously Kenna has been unrelenting in her pursuit of thrashing blacked death. But the juxtaposition does her well compositionally and the instruments alone build off of one and other. It’s all power trio music in the style of black metal. The artists states: “I was listening to a lot of 70’s and Black Sabbath. Of course, I make metal. It’s a kinda hopeful record in a way.” So in a way this not depressive black metal, but hopeful black metal.
Kenna is a one woman wrecking crew on bass, guitar and drums. She burns the strings off in layers of distortion, her programmed punch of relentless blast beats, the dirge like wallow of the bass booms below hell. There so much influence from different styles of extreme guitar music, that it makes it hard to pick out exactly what genre is being mangled at what moment. This is the most adventurous but also tight musically she’s ever been. The impressionistic palette of limited color is utilized to an impressive degree, as Kenna belts out something that is both muted and blazing. Collective Ego Death thinks it might be her finest yet, and are excited for everyone to hear “The Desire To Be At Home Part 3: The Dark In The Light”.
