Lipglo$$ Speaks

And just like so much of what Lipglo$$ spent time to build, they so thought destroyed with with this album. All mystique and fixation in exploring the unknown depth of certain styles is thrown out the window in exchange for what could arguably called Proto-Hyper Pop. In a weird way Lipglo$$ was ahead of the game in their realization that SoundCloud rap could be manipulated and reformed into the form of synth pop. The lyrics are focused on death and relationships and is soul bearing in a way unseen in the artist’s vast discography. This is synth pop for vampires and reclusive sun avoiders. For an artist who is normally downed in reverb and distortion, it’s an interesting break into the dry and straight forward world of vocal pop.
It’s a tape not only ahead of its time but also ahead of the artist themself. They later deeper in this direction without the cassette recorded quality. These were demos and unreleased and unmixed records recorded over the course of 4 years and compiled as a one off. They’re so lofi they sometimes resemble a soundcloud version of The Mountain Goats early material. That rawness is one the biggest strengths of this collection. It’s sometimes slow and alien but just as often confessional and simple. The straight forward motion of these tracks is strange in this context but it works to their advantage. Lipglo$$ said of the tape: “Why the fuck did I release this stuff. It was a personal diary of tracks usually recorded in one sitting after big events in my life. I think I was bored and felt like I had to put music out. Otherwise you all would have never heard this shit.”
An apt comparison might be the 90’s masterworks of Tinderworks, if they were made by cough syrup addled, face tattooed menace. They’re not rapping or singing. It’s full of moaning and talking over yourself. It’s strange that Lipglo$$ never intended to releases these track as they’re compositionally very strong. But the emotion and otherworldly use of vocals and instrumentals in this context are kind of off putting. It does feel like spying and without any real backstory it spirals quickly into classic Liplgo$$ian levels of confusion. The ventures into folk, classical pop, and predictive pop all pay off. The ideal of Trap is also injected into the veins of this whole project. There’s a sneaking suspicion it could have ended up being a Datpiff mixtape if swapped around a little bit.
Collective Ego Death is nearing the end of our Lipglo$$ reissues. In February we will celebrate our 1st anniversary as a label. Enjoy these remaining Lipglo$$ albums and thank you for helping us find our way this year.
