End Of An Era

In the end the Lipglo$$ project ended with a gentle wave and a set of amazingly warped experimental pop tracks. Really, 30 plus releases under the name Lipglo$$ amounted to so many different sounds and directions there was any way they could have put out their last album, and it would make total and utter sense. So in this way Grunge Hymns was as crafty of a way as the artist could have sent the project off. It’s covered in catchy vocals, simple jokes, and mind warping musical mayhem. It doesn’t burn and it’s not one last middle finger. It’s showing off and strutting your way out of existence. It’s a cocktease of a thing that makes you wish they had made albums worth of material like this. But it wouldn’t make sense. To arrive at the point where it was going to pass peacefully the artist needed a beginning, middle and end. The early albums full of percussion filled rage and densely deadly polyrhythms. The middle period was an exploration: of how sounds can grind against each other and still make for an interesting listen whilst performing black magic spells. And finally the late period of Lipglo$$ went pop. It sure wasn’t selling out, as Grunge Hymns is a singular monolith of pop’s dark side. It was the culmination and goodbye of all that potential energy.
“I was struck the fuck down. I was set up to do my first show in forever and an hour before I went on, my computer killed itself. My speakers broke and my receiver fried. It was an all at once, everything broke type of scenario. I meditated on it for a while and came to the conclusion it was over. That I was done because fate said no. And I accepted it.” There it is straight from Lipglo$$’s mouth. The project didn’t end because it was a choice. The option to continue was removed. So the cliffhanger of Grunge Hymns has some perfectly placed fate involved with this final record.
“Spank It!” is a straightforward, Ween style, joke song that sounds like Gary Wilson performing a Tim & Eric track. “CO Water” is simply beautiful. It’s what Nick Drake would sound like if he was hunched over Ableton in 2016. The pain and openness of the track centers it in an otherwise chaotic album. There’s that pissed and shifting house sound that is uniquely Lipglo$$’s on “Make The Song Bleed” and “If You Blow, You Blow”. You can easily hear the influence of 90’s rave and hip-hop mashed into an angelic pulse. And then there’s “Sacred Smoke” in all it’s proto-Sicko Mode glory. It’s deconstructed Trap with a progressive rock underbelly. The ever present GIRL MAGIK BEEOCH sample is tossed lovingly through out the whole tape, but it’s the key the “Sacred Smoke”.

We’re so happy to have reissued all of Lipglo$$’s albums in our first year! Next week Collective Ego Death will turn 1 and we’re beyond grateful to all the artists and fans that made our first year what it was. We put out an album every week and managed to hit on so many different genres. Go grab our discography and thank you. Lipglo$$ is and was a true legend of a project and hope you enjoyed these albums as much as we did.
