Down With The Sickness

DJ Staff Infection is the solo dance music project of Diana from Rimbaud’s Later Writings. Where as her music with the group is heavily experimental and short, under the DJ Staff Infection moniker she produces throwback techno in a gloriously filthy form. Pieces of Acid and Trance, juxstaposed against some creepy form of Happy Hardcore. It sounds upbeat and inspiring while simultaneously menacing and off kilter. The aspect of the music that shine through is the mirror ball pulsating of the rhythms, while the chords and notes snake around each other in midnight’s garden. To say there is no relation to the artist’s previous work is both an insult to their group project as well as this solo album. It expands upon some of the musical ideals of Diana’s prior experiments but finds its home in the fringes of dated dance music.
If there is a theme to this record, it’s that corny sounds cease you become corny when they are placed in a more disquieting space. The blown out Acid Rez and total surrender to the raves and Happy Hardcore of the past, against genres that found their footing at the same time, in a boxing match against each other. They don’t fight for space or sound but rather for coherence and understanding in your mind. It sounds as childlike as John Wayne Gacy. A colorful clown full of rage and murder. Against the work of Rimbaud’s Later Writings there is sonic coherence but also a sense that these sounds have been forced into more concrete holes.
Opener “Grubby Grubby” wastes no time getting into a dirty robotic funk groove. It’s feels crushed and tiny but also huge and able to bring a dancefloor to its’ knees. A simple but rumbling motor transitions into “Purely Pink”, which resembles both late 90’s Tech-house and modern chip tunes. It’s so catchy and sugary that the distortion on its edges sounds like the melting chocolate on a dip cone. “One Girl, Ten Balloons” is flying a kite on a windy day. It’s trademark childish but also a real stomper. If you’re at all into Daft Punk and minimalism, then these tracks are designed for you. The intentional simplicity and focus of drums and bass makes this a perfect tape to get things done to.
DJ Staff Infection’s first album “Night Nails” is one that we at CED are hyped for the world to here in all its crushed out sunshine. It’s a ray of hope and simplicity in these increasingly complex times.
