Explorations In Fractured Psychedelia

The original cover for Lipglo$$’s Never Gave A Fuck was made for a French Montana track. Let that sink in before delving into the fractured world this album spins. Perhaps no more disparate parts have ever been assembled to make a piece of art, yet Montana’s passing on it ended up being an inspiration for Lipglo$$. The title and vibe were already set before recording began. It’s another record that floats between the spaces of “classic” material and an evolution for an artist who never stopped moving. N.G.A.F. is bitter and flagrant. A exploration of the self in full. The record transmits the idea of perpetually learning who you are in spades. That you don’t stagnant and neither does who you are.
“I was exploring my own Queerness and how it isn’t an all or nothing thing. It’s always fluid. I dripped and soaked these tracks, ya know?” Lipglo$$ said on the subject. But these gender fluid ideals are shown as spikes in the road. That’s why the focus is so scattered, because the target is too. Your clunking machine of a body needed to be lubricated sometimes. And exploring outside the bounds of your comfort will often yield the liquid you seek. One must stop short of calling it a celebration though. The burning sensation in your genitals always keeps the full on party at bay. It’s a drifting meandering document of what a person went through to get to the other side. Painful but also beautiful and full of surprises. If your looking for a consistent sound or a stable, solid sided album, this one is not for you. But if you are on the brink, confused and willing to see what the world has to offer, then this globetrotting experience will help guide you.
Heavily influenced by 90’s dance and modern Trap, N.G.A.F. has a sound all it’s own. Granted the common building blocks of the previous 30 albums do rear their heads, it’s never distractingly or unnecessarily. The call-backs are added when they add to the music and not superciliously.
Pieces like “Acid Haz” and “Wasp Interlude #1” find themselves somewhere between Enya and Migos. “Rock Tha Boat” is New Jack Swing with elements of John Cage and a healthy dose of ADD. The subtle sinking feeling that your reality is slipping away one note at a time. From the jungle soundscape march of “Drinkin’ Neon” to the rectangular minimal rhythms of “Purr-Gut-Tory”, N.G.A.F. is a sampler for the uninitiated in the nightmare world of Lipglo$$. We’ve lost the French Montana cover but retained and enhanced the core of what this record has to offer. Collective Ego Death is excited to be closing out 2020 with the artist we started with, eternal thanks to all our artists and supporters during our first year! More to come in January.
