A Foggy Return

After rapid fire releasing over 25 albums in 2017, Lipglo$$ took a year off and returned in 2018 with “A Very Deep Dutch Filled With Shit”. In a way it feels like the next logical step after the ADD nightmare house of “Soulless”. It’s composed lovingly and turns minimal pieces into something beyond themselves. The record has the feeling of post-rock and post-metal in its bones, but more sonically resembles IDM or Dr. Dre. Lipglo$$ said “The title is a Marquis D’s Sade quote. It’s its own type of fucked up record. It’s sits outside my others for some reason beyond my understanding.” It is a unique entry in the artist’s discography as it moves in entirely different ways. The focus is not on the drums and the music is tight and focused compared to the normally drugged out drift.
The time away did the album good. It helped springboard a new direction toward songwriting and away from pure and total abstraction. Lipglo$$ made 25 albums of cloudy mush before finding footing on normal ground. The songs repeat and loop like dance music and if everything was less eschew, it might even resemble deep house. But it’s not. Truly the album doesn’t sound like anything else. It floats in some kind of plane that burnt out EDM DJs always hoped to float into. It’s the cleanest and concisest statement Lipglo$$ ever attempted before retracting back into the endlessly psychedelic void.
“A Very Deep Ditch” often resembles Bach playing Aphex Twin. Someone lost in a fugue of circles discovering a modular and losing their mind. The way it floats and comforts often feels false. As if it will all be pulled away in an instant and you’ll be left moving and bobbing confused. Confused is the vibe. It’s the strength of the sonic ambiguity. To make you not unsure of what will come next, but when it will come next. Get lost in the fog of Lipglo$$’s comeback album “A Very Deep Ditch Filled With Shit” remastered by Erodi Uakari for Collective Ego Death.
